What is "GIS"?

GIS stands for Geographic Information System. It is a means of displaying and analyzing data that can be referenced geographically. GIS can take data that has been stored in tables, give it geographic references, which can then be displayed graphically on a map.

How does the Knott County government use the GIS mapping?

The GIS mapping database is relied upon heavily by the County government. Data is used to increase the efficiency of emergency responses and 911 calls. GIS data is also used to aid in tourism development as well as the identification of property owners for future tourism related projects. Data is also used to identify future water line expansion projects within Knott County.
